Adobe makes Photoshop Elements, which was specifically designed for working with photos, including features that merge photos into panoramas, allow multiple types of image corrections at once, and simplify the creation of images for the web and web pages.

Photoshop Elements 2 Solutions by Mikkel Aaland is an excellent book on using the program, which has tips on topics such as improving portraits, product shots, and panoramas.
